In spite of the rainy night and the Phillies first playoff game, quite a few folks showed up at the Penn Wynne Fire Company's Open House on Oct. 6.

For adults and children alike, it was an opportunity meet the firemen and learn how the fire department operates.  The fire trucks parked ousted the station were set up with a doors open so the visitors could scoot inside the cabs and see the extensive gear that fills the compartments of the trucks.

Children received fire hats, coloring books, and fire prevention materials, but the biggest treat for the kids was when the firemen set up a fire extinguisher demonstration and let the kids put out small fires.  Their faces lit up with excitement when their turn came to dowse the flames.

The finale of the event was an impressive demonstration of how fire department rescue squads can effect rescues when people are trapped in cars. Starting with a complete sedan, the firemen cut away the doors and took off the roof of the car using hydraulic cutters and prying devices called the "Jaws of Life."  It took only a few minutes for them to disassemble the vehicle.  Young and old watching the demonstration learned that their local fire department was prepared to handle the most serious emergencies with skill and speed.
