Philadelphia Eagles Choose Chip Kelly as Coach

Chip Kelly, a top candidate, will replace Andy Reid as new coach of Philadelphia Eagles, team announced Wednesday.

The search is over.

Chip Kelly has been named the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

ESPN and the Philadelphia Inquirer first reported the hiring of Kelly, which the team then confirmed on its website around 12:30 p.m. A press conference has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m., the team said.

The University of Oregon coach was considered among the team's top choices by owner Jeff Lurie but announced after his interview with the Birds that he was staying put.

Well, those plans have changed. It may be due to the fact that the University of Oregon was facing NCAA sanctions.

Kelly coached at the University of Oregon for four years and recently won the Fiesta Bowl. He will be the 21st coach in Philadelphia Eagles history.

“Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles,” said owner Jeffrey Lurie in a press release reported in the Inquirer. “He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh energetic approach to our team.”

The Birds brass conducted an exhaustive search, interviewing college candidates like Bill O'Brien of Penn State, former NFL coaches like Lovie Smith and Brian Billick and top coordinators like Jay Gruden and Mike Nolan.

The team seemed sweet on Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who was flown in for a second interview Tuesday.

Reid served 14 years as coach, replacing Ray Rhodes after the 1998 season.

Reid, the winningest coach in franchise history, took a job as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs a week after being fired by the Eagles after the team finished 4-12. The Eagles finished 8-8 last season.

Something is fishy about this Kelly signing. Last week he claimed he loved Oregon had no interest in the pro game and now this week he takes a pro job? $50 says we start hearing about rules violations and sanctions at Oregon in the next month.

Yeah but it is still a shady move to publicly commit to Oregon and then bolt the next week. He would have been better off just keeping his mouth shut instead of lieing to his kids and recruits.

I think he has a great footbal mind and could be a good fit here but I question his character a bit after this move.

This will make or back the team for the next 10 years. We will see if this a great move or a major mistake for the Philadelphia Eagles.

No way that Oregon offense works in the NFL. So I hope Kelly's not a one-trick pony.

With the right players, that offense has already worked pretty well in the NFL (just Redskins, Seahawks, and even Panther's fans). The problem is Nick Foles isn't that type of player and Vick is too old and beat up and frankly not good enough to run the pistol offense. That said, it should be noted that Bill Belichick flew to Oregon last off season to get some tips from Kelly to incorporate into his offense (Kelly runs most plays out of a two TE formation) so clearly his passing schemes are NFL worthy.

Maybe you should do some homework before making such dumb comments.

I guess U do not watch football much, what the heck is the 49 ers playing....the same type of offense that chip uses.....The key is getting the players to do it....Football is football from the winged T to the 4 horseman of Notre Dame....U play it the same way.

Seems like Mr Kelly didn't want to coach the Browns but feels the Eagles have a better chance in the near future.

This guy runs a gimmick offense. This guy will be the 2nd coming of Steve Spurrier. Terrible hiring.

I am really impressed by the comments of all those who have not played, let alone coached college or pro football. I take those opinions as a grain of salt. None of knows what Kelly can achieve in the pros at the Eagles. It is one thing to make judgements about Reid after 14 years of observation (I did it), and another thing to make judgements about a person you know little about. I see the innuendo about Kelly brewing here. The water is boiling, but there is no tea to put in it yet.

Cool it! I'll have opinion a year from now.

Maybe the eagles just need a whole new fresh start lets give the coach a chance ya never know it could be a blessing in disguise its not all about the coach either someone needs to start coming down on these players stop trying to make it on camera and start getting into the end zone as a team one thing I have learned from being an eagles fan is take it one game at a time never never never set our eye on the Super Bowl not yet anyways lol

Andy Reid will have Kansas City in a super bowl before eagles make it.
Chip Kelly left oregon all of a sudden when he first declined.suspicious. PERHAPS
what the eagles need is a good to great quarterback and a line to protect him. Foles is not that quarterback.Next year they will be in last place again.

Doesn't matter to me why Kelly changed his mind. I'll take ANYONE to coach this team after 14 frustrating years with Reid. As long as he hires the right coordinators and we get a decent draft from Howie, we are not going to be in the basement long. I'm pretty sure Kelly is smart enough to know he can't just do exactly what he did in college, I'm betting he'll adapt his system. Something Reid could never do.

They just better not sign Tim Tebow to run that QB read option offense.
