Octomom, Stripping and 2,000 Apples: The Year in OMG PD

We look at the most unusual crime stories of 2012 in the Greater Philadelphia Area.

While we here in Greater Philadelphia Patch-land have only been bringing you weird police stories from around the area for a few months, we've acquired enough odd and unusual crime to last an entire year.

Presented below are the five most unbelievable and unusual OMG PD items of the year, using the highly scientific method of "things that, upon re-reading, I wouldn't believe myself unless I had written them."

The Sanctity of Marriage: I'm not sure where to even start with this one, but here goes. The following all comes courtesy of Marple Newtown Patch:

Damon Feldman is a Broomall resident and the founder of a TV show called Celebrity Boxing, which is exactly what it sounds like. Feldman told police that earlier in the year, he had set up an event that included an appearance by Nadya Suleman, better known as " the Octomom."

According to Feldman, part of the event included a fake wedding proposal between himself and Suleman, in which he gave her at $7,500 diamond engagement ring. The event was in February and, according to Feldman, Suleman has yet to return the ring.

The full report is here, and it might shed a little more light on this extra-unusual OMG PD item.

Armed and Naked: How do you shut down City Avenue, one of the Philadelphia area's most busy and well-traveled streets, for more than three hours in the middle of the work week? Well, you could always strip naked during a standoff with the police. Bala Cynwyd Patch has more.

Got to Make Sure You Turn the Water Off: According to a report from Phoenixville Patch, two men were arrested after police say their attempted copper piping theft caused a water main rupture and a flood in the basement of an abandoned home. Read the full story here.

That's an Insane Amount of Apples: According to a report from Haverford Patch, police responded to a report that, over the course of two days, 2,000 apples were stolen off of a resident's trees in her back year. Read the full story here.

Not Quite the Same as Hailing a Taxi: According to a report from Bala Cynwyd Patch, a 48-year-old Bala Cynwyd man waved down a police officer on the 100 block of City Avenue in front of Lord & Taylor and tried to get into the passenger door of the police car, which was locked, police said. The man was cited for public drunkenness upon sobering, police said.

About this column: OMG PD reviews the surprising, shocking, stunning and occasionally silly police-related incidents reported by Greater Philadelphia Patch sites over the last week. All people mentioned in these stories are innocent until proven guilty. Charges and arrests do not indicate guilt. Reach out to Nate at nathana@patch.com with questions about this column.
