Montco Could Become the Hotbed for 2014 Governor Race

Two politicians from the county may face-off in a race for the state's seat.

Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet, but with phrases like "80 percent sure" and "pragmatism and practicality" being floated around, it is possible that Montgomery County may be home to a hot race in the 2014 Pennsylvania governor's race.

Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce Castor has not put a percentage on his desire to enter the race, but has said he is keeping a close eye on the current governor, Tom Corbett's actions in the second half of his term.

"I'm not going to run just to make a splash. I want Pennsylvania to go down the right path," Castor said in an interview with Pennsylvania Cable Network, covered by Patch in January. "I want Pennsylvania to be a conservative state, but with pragmatism and practicality. I don't see those things happening, but I'm watching."

At that time, he'd said he'd gone from "sticking his toes" in the waters of the 2014 race for Pennsylvania governor to calling it "more up to the ankles."

On the democrat's bill, Rep. Allyson Schwartz was cited by Montgomery County Democratic Chairman Marcel Groen as being about "80 percent of the way" to launching a bid, according to CapitolWire.

Schwartz's chief of staff, Rachel Magnuson, confirmed the congresswoman’s interest to POLITICO. As representative of the 13th Congressional District, which encompasses most of the county, Schwartz has not yet made the move official.

When asked about the 80 percent comment, Schwartz told the Morning Call "that's pretty accurate."

According to philly.com's Clout, Schwartz also "has $3.1 million in her campaign fund, raised under the strict restrictions for federal races. She can dump that all into a run for governor, since state regulations are far more lax."

Should the two become the ticket for the 2014 race, the county is likely to be a hotbed of activity. With two local faces in a race for governor, the county could be home to the next leader of Pennsylvania.

Would you like to see Schwartz and Castor face off for governor? Who would you ultimately like to see in the seat? Tell us in the comments.

This would certainly be an interesting race to watch unfold. Castor clearly recognizes Corbett's vulnerability on numerous issues.

Gee, wouldn't it be just too bad if PA and the whole US could benefit from our God given natural resources!! And don't even start the crap about health issues, drinking water, etc. because it has never been proven...nut cases just trying to start trouble.

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb. I hope there's an independent or third party candidate to vote for. But over the last 6 to 8 years every candidate who wasn't a two party puppet has been kicked off the ballot even though they collected the required amount of signatures. They were forced off the ballot by threats of huge lawsuits if they didn't withdrawal.

Interestingly, there is no mention of Bryn Mawr's Rob McCord who is also Pennsylvania's treasurer with a lot of money in the bank and connections to Wall Street and other investor class money.

I was also looking for Mr McCord, who happens to be one of the few in office in Pa with public service and integrity at the forefront of his tenure. He happens to be a great guy and officeholder, for all you sneering cynics out there who believe otherwise.

I can't say that I'm an immediate fan of either. I think both have policies that I agree with and both have made decisions and voted against things I support. The fact that the Republicans are already thinking of putting someone against Corbett in the primary says a lot about his current tenure. I'm hoping that these are not the only names tossed about from either party as there are certainly better options out there.

No, Mark ... I think it's Bruce Castor who's doing all the challenge thinking. I don't hear anyone else talking about taking Corbett on.

Since Rep. Allyson Schwartz does not seem to know how to find Abington, how will she ever locate Harrisburg?

Wow ... I thought Abington was the ONLY place she could find besides NE Philly!! Fact is, she'll have little appeal to anyone west of Rt 232.
