Lululemon Squeezes Into Suburban Square

The yoga-inspired athletic apparel company will open before the holiday season in Ardmore.

When life gives you lemons, sign a lease with them.

At least, that seems to be the philosophy of Kimco Realty, the owner of Suburban Square Shopping Center in Ardmore. Specialty apparel company Lululemon Athletica will be moving into the old Seidenberg Luggage space across from Williams Sonoma, and should open before the holiday season, according to Mark Bachus, Suburban Square general manager.

It's a welcome piece of news following the departure of Jay Michael Salon and Spa on Saturday, which brought the number of vacancies in the shopping center up to 10.

Now, the center's vacancy count is back down to single digits, and several other leases are in the works, Bachus said.

Lululemon is a luxury women's athletic apparel company, based in Canada, with approximately 180 stores, according to the company's Q1 fiscal report. There are five Lululemon locations in Pennsylvania, including stores in King of Prussia, Philadelphia and Wayne.

"We’re very excited about Lululemon," Bachus said. "They have some great stores and we’re looking forward to them moving to Suburban Square."

Hmm, they are almost directly across the street from City Sports. They're going to have to find a way to differentiate themselves if they want to succeed.

Not sure how any business can succeed at the current rent in SS.

Seems like the leasing company lacks serious marketing knowledge. Great point about City Sports ... what about New Balance & Walking Company? An outdoor mall filled with workout clothes/shoes seems pointless. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to attract Tory Burch, Burberry ... except for charging extortionist rates or greedy practices.
