This photo was taken somewhere in Ardmore. Can you guess where (and when)?

Last Monday, we asked readers to identify the location, and time period, of a photo taken at an intersection somewhere in Ardmore. The building, which burned in 1964, was located at the intersection of Ardmore Ave. and Lancaster Ave., where the Bryn Mawr Trust building now stands.

The photo, according to Ted Goldsborough of the Lower Merion Historical Society, was taken circa 1929.

If you look closely, you will see signs for Ardmore Hardware Store and American Stores—Acme's predecessor. Further back in the photo, the arch of the building that is now Philadelphia Sports Club is visible. The building would have been a movie theater at the time this photo was taken.

Kudos to Patch users Stuart Dessner, Jack Kerr and Beege Marshall, all of whom correctly identified the location.

If you haven't registered your guess for this week's historical photo challenge, do so before Sunday morning, at which point we'll post a current photo of the spot.

In the historic picture, there are people and cars and activity. Of course, they did not have Lower Merion's new Bryn Mawr Trust Gateway Fountain for which taxpayers paid $135,000. How our lives are so much better off for the amenity of a bubbling fountain ...not exactly city center though, is it? not a lot of people gathering around as a community, is there? oh well...the Commissioners know what is best for the rest of us and know how to spend our money better than we do.
