Get Out: A Dickens of A Time, & Holiday Fun All Weekend

What's going on in and around the Ardmore Patch this weekend.

 

This weekend, there's lots of holiday fun to be had in Ardmore and the surrounding area. Check out A Christmas Story at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, head to the Narberth Dickens Festival for some Victorian fun, or eat some latkes at the Chanukah Extravaganza on Sunday. If you're in the mood for music, enjoy jazz renditions of Christmas classics or a performance of Handel's Messiah this Sunday. Here are our best bets for weekend fun, below.

Ardmore VFW Christmas Party / Operation Santa Claus

  • When/Where: Dec. 10, 5—10 p.m. / VFW Post 843, 45 E. Lancaster Road, Ardmore
  • Why Go: Chances are you’ve never been inside this members-only club in the middle of Ardmore’s business strip, but the doors are open for everyone on Saturday. Just bring an unwrapped present for a needy kid, and the folks from the VFW and American Legion (and their friends, aka “social members”) will see to it that it gets delivered.
  • Cost: Free entrance

Narberth Dickens Festival

  • When/Where: Saturday, Dec. 10 from noon to 4 p.m. in downtown Narberth
  • Why Go: Explore 1840s London, meet Ebeneezer Scrooge, enjoy authentic Victorian carolers and many activities for kids, including a scavenger hunt. Free showing of the Muppets Christmas Carol at the Narberth Theater at 11 a.m.
  • Cost: Free entrance. Carriage rides are $5.

Main Line Reform Temple Holiday Bazaar

  • When/Where: Sunday and Monday, Dec. 11 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Main Line Reform Temple
  • Why Go: Get all you need for holiday gifts at Main Line Reform Temple's Holiday Bazaar, where over 40 crafters and vendors will be selling their wares.  Items for sale include jewelry, toys, women’s and children’s clothing, food, housewares and stationery. Several charities will also be represented. Food and drink will be available.
  • Cost: No entrance fee, cost of items varies

Chanukah Extravaganza

  • When/Where: Sunday, Dec. 11 from 12 to 2 p.m. at 303 Meeting House Ln #A, Merion Station
  • Why Go: Celebrate Chanukah thanks to the Chabad of Penn Wynne and Kaiserman JCC. Face painting, arts and crafts, make your own sufganiyot (jelly donut), enjoy latkes and attend an olive press workshop. 
  • Cost: Free

Villanova Jazz Band & Orchestra Christmas Concert

  • When/Where: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Chapel, Villanova University
  • Why Go: Enjoy Christmas favorites including the Hallelujah Chorus played by full orchestra and sung by members of Villanova's combined choirs.
  • Cost: Free

Handel's Messiah

  • When/Where: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Proclamation Presbyterian Church
  • Why Go: On three consecutive Sundays, enjoy a piece of Handel's Messiah (Christmas, Passion and Easter). Proclamation’s Chancel Choir and friends along with soloists and orchestra will perform. Proclamation's senior pastor will also deliver a message complementing the music each evening. No tickets or reservations are necessary, and childcare will be available. After the service, coffee and holiday treats will be served.
  • Cost: Free

Wolf PAC Presents Winnie the Pooh

  • When/Where: Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 11 at 1 p.m., at McShain Performing Arts Center at Rosemont College
  • Why Go: See the stories of A. A. Milne come alive, as performed by Wolf Performing Arts students in grades four through 12.
  • Cost:  General admission $18; students/seniors/children $12

Wolf PAC Presents Romeo and Juliet

  • When/Where: Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 11 at 5 p.m., McShain Performing Arts Center at Rosemont College
  • Why Go: Students from the Wolf Performing Arts Center, in grades six through 12, present Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
  • Cost:  General admission $18; students/seniors/children $12
