The driver of a late-model Volkswagen Jetta with New York state license plates escaped serious injury Wednesday morning after striking a utility pole head-on, along the west-bound lane of E. Wynnewood Road across from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, police and a witness said.

The driver was a young woman, and evidently a student at St. Joseph’s University, said Tom McConnell, the owner of a home on Beacon Lane who heard the accident happen some 30 yards from where he and his wife were sitting in their kitchen. That was not confirmed, however, and the woman’s identity and official condition could not be learned immediately.

Police said the victim was taken to Lankenau Hospital for further evaluation. The accident happened at about 9:40 a.m. As of shortly after 11 a.m., police were still standing by for PECO to assess the damage. Though one pole appeared to be destroyed, there was no danger posed by hanging or live wires, police said.

McConnell said the driver walked away from the accident with the help of a group of people who helped pull her up and out of the passenger side window—the four-door sedan had ended up settling on its side, with the driver-side doors to the pavement. Motor oil and other automotive fluids plumed to the side of the vehicle.

“There were probably 10 people rushing to her aid immediately,” McConnell said, adding that it appeared she had injured her knee in the collision.

“I think she’s OK. They took a while before they brought her over, so I don’t think there was anything emergent that they were worried about.”

McConnell said he saw the woman speaking on her cell phone before being taken to the hospital.

I don't mean to sound insensitive, but it's nice to see an article that specifies that a young person had a traffic accident. I'm sorry the young woman was hurt, but if a traffic accident is reported, it's nice to see that a young person was at fault rather than an "elderly" person. The media tends to report accidents caused by "elderly" people, with the implication that they shouldn't be driving because of their age.

Goodness - took out a light pole, wound up on it's side with the front end bashed in - and she walked away with only a banged up knee! Lets hear it for VW!!!!!

Also, nice to see you Wynnewoodians rushing to the rescue. I guess the only question is, how do you have that kind of an accident; straight road, mid-morning, no rain?

Article didn't say if another car was involved.

Nick: Good questions. Police did not mention another vehicle. Plus, the car hit a pole on the right-hand side of the road in the direction it was going, so chances are good it was only the one car. There was also no evidence of another vehicle at the scene.

I was one of the first people at the scene and called 911 to report it. Quite a scary start to the work morning! The girl in question is VERY lucky to have walked away from that with nothing more than a banged up knee and some cuts on her hand. No other cars were involved --- there weren't too many cars in either lane right at that moment. She said she was a student but not from St. Joe's. I think people at the scene said she was on her phone and hit the utility pole, but I only saw the car flipping, not what caused it.
