1900 Photo Location Revealed

Learn about the history of this Ardmore location.

Last Monday, we asked readers to identify the location of a 1900 photo taken somewhere in Ardmore.

We had no guesses ventured in the comments section, but two readers who sent their guesses via email identified the location correctly: Monday's photo was taken at the site of the old Ardmore Public School on Ardmore Avenue.

The Ardmore Public School building was built in 1876 at the intersection of Ardmore Avenue and School Lane. From 1894 to 1910, it served as both an elementary school and Lower Merion's first high school, according to the Lower Merion Historical Society.

Monday's photo depicts the building as it looked once destroyed by fire in 1900; the school was rebuilt the following year and torn down in 1967.

Now what stands at this spot is Ardmore House, a housing facility for the elderly and disabled.

Check back on Monday for a new historical photo challenge.
