Briggs salutes Lower Merion for recycling efforts, announces state grant
HARRISBURG, Feb. 8 – State Rep. Tim Briggs, D-Montgomery, today announced that Lower Merion Township has been awarded a $498,469 environmental grant from the state.
The grant comes from the state's Recycling Performance Grant Program, established in 1988. Briggs said Lower Merion's grant is based on the 27,021 tons it recycled in 2010 and the township's population. These funds are in addition to the state money the township receives to establish and maintain recycling programs.
"Recycling is not only environmentally friendly, it makes economic sense," Briggs said. "Pennsylvania is a national leader in recycling efforts and I applaud Lower Merion for contributing to that distinction."
Projects eligible for grants include operating compost facilities, developing web-based recycling programs, expanding recycling processing facilities and continuing and creating curbside recycling programs.
Briggs holds an annual Family GreenFest event in collaboration with the Ardmore Initiative to help get the word out on recycling and other initiatives for sustainable living. The event features composting tips, free recycling and alternative energy information, among others.
Briggs represents the 149th Legislative District in Montgomery County. For more information, visit www.pahouse.com/Briggs, or get regular updates on Twitter and Facebook.
